Daneš BRZICA
Dr. Danes Brzica is a Senior Economist and the Head of a Research Project Unit at the Institute of Economic Research, Slovak Academy of Sciences (IER, SAS) in Bratislava, the Slovak Republic. Previously, he served as Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic. The research focuses on governance, knowledge management, talent mobility, transformation processes (especially in Central and Eastern Europe and China), macro-organizational structures, resilience and governance of cities, soft security, regional/city, institutional and technological developments.
Had lectured in economics at the Comenius University, Bratislava, worked at the Slovak Institute of International Studies, and acted as coordinator for economics and finance at the School of Public Administration, Academia Istropolitana, Bratislava. Occasionally had lectures abroad (Il Centro Studi Jacques Maritain di Portogruaro, Portogruaro (Italy), Cornell University (US), Chuo University (Tokyo, Japan), Reading University (UK), Södertörn University (Sweden) and others especially on governance and transitive economies.
Held several times the position of a member of the Scientific Council at the IER SAS (once as the Vice Chairman) and at the Institute of Forecasting, SAS. He is a member of two doctoral study committees in the field of study “Sectoral and cross-sectional economies” and “Spatial Planning” (at the Slovak Technical University). He is also a member of the Supervisory and Advisory Board of the European Center for Comparative Commercial and Corporate Law at Jagiellonian University, Krakow (Poland), was a member of the Focus Group Competitive Advantage and Innovation Performance (Center for Economic Studies, University of Economics and Management, Prague) and was a member of the evaluation INEKO Group/HESO Project Evaluation of Economic Reforms. He has been appointed by the Minister of Education of the Slovak republic as a member of VEGA research grants commission (his fourth period) and a member of the National Fellowship Program´s selection committee (second period). During 2004-2005 a member of the expert group on Constructed regional advantage (European Commission, DG Research). He served for several years as an expert for the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the Ministry of Building and Regional Development, an expert at the center of excellence CESTA, and was a member of the International Permanent Study group on Transition and Privatization headed by S. Ichimura (set up by the European Center for Peace and Development – ECPD). In 2011-2012 he served as an expert for the international MAPEER SMEs project and a national SIEA project. He has worked as a project evaluator for COST (EU), GA CR (CZ), and APVV, SIEA and VEGA (SK). Other expert positions previously held or expert opinion provided for: Office of the Government, SR; Ministry of Finance, SR; Ministry of Economy, SR; Ministry of Defense, SR, City of Bratislava.
He has participated at various other projects (e.g., COST Foresight 2030, ACE/PHARE, UNDP, ILO, IFO, EU Framework Program, Slovakia 2030, COST,), seminars and conferences both home and abroad (e.g., Australia, Austria, Colombia, Finland, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Island, Italy, the U.A.E., the U.S.). His work includes also expert studies and consulting for companies, ministries and organizations (e.g., Center for European Security Studies, UNDP, ifo Munich, KPMG, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Slovak Academy of Sciences, WIIW, City of Bratislava, Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, National Agency for ICT Support, ILO, Siemens, Microsoft, Nomura Research Institute). Research fellowships included Austria, Greece, Germany, Japan, Russian Federation, Sweden (2000, 2001, and 2002), China (1997, 2007), the U.K., and Luxembourg.
He has published (authored or co-authored) more than 200 scientific and professional books and papers (of which 28 books). Recently he coordinated the project „Attractiveness of country and large-scale cities in terms of mobility of talents.” Reviewer (scientific journals - e.g., Ekonomický časopis, Ekonomické rozhľady, Planning Practice and Research /Routledge/, Managing Global Transition).

He received the Slovak Literary Fund Award (SLFA) for a Professional Article (1990), the SLFA for the Best economic book (2005, 2012, both as co-author), Golden Biatec Award for a book (2018, as co-author), and was mentioned among the "Top Ten" Slovak Economists (Source: Gregor, M., Schneider, O.: The World is Watching: Rankings of Czech and Slovak Economics Departments.
