Every year since the establishment of the Slovak Republic, the Institute of Economic Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences has prepared its assessment of current economic developments. This involves both an analysis of recent trends and an assessment within a broader time frame. The period covered by the current analysis is characterised by the first phase of the public budget consolidation programme. That is why it is subtitled ‘Diagnostics in the initial phase of consolidation’. This year's edition has been significantly expanded. We are opening up several new areas that we have only touched on marginally in the past. As part of this innovation, we have added more comprehensive views on the impact of global trends, changes in the business environment and the issue of energy availability and prices (in the form of a deeper probe into the gas market). In the context of the preparation and implementation of the consolidation operation, the publication examines a number of issues in the dynamics of the economy, its internal stability, its socio-economic development or its external economic relations. It proceeds from an initial summary view, through a series of more detailed views of specific issues, to an outlook for further development.
