This annual publication focuses primarily on assessing economic development over the past year, whilst also placing the issues examined within a broader timeframe. It analyses and evaluates characteristic changes in the economy (in terms of its growth, stability, factors of competitiveness, the use of public resources, the business environment and other areas). Slovakia’s economic performance in the recent period resembles an organism lacking vitality – long-term growth drivers have weakened, compounded by current barriers arising from the consolidation of public finances or global tensions. However, this is not a downturn in the sense of a recession, but rather one characterised by weak, sluggish growth. The traditional chapters dealing with the various dimensions of economic dynamics and stability are enriched with one-off explorations of specific issues. In this year’s edition, such ‘bonus topics’ include an analysis of the electricity market and an analysis of the impact of an ageing population on one segment of the healthcare sector. The publication begins with an overview, which then branches out into a series of more detailed examinations of specific issues. Finally, it returns to a synthesising perspective when presenting the outlook for future developments.
