The external environment of the Slovak economy represented by the European Union and in particular by the Economic and Monetary Union has significant impacts on economic policy of Slovakia, including feasibility of structural changes. Given the turbulent development in the last three years, effects of the European integration on the member states gain new dimen-sions and become less predictable. The paper deals with selected issues of the European inte-gration as the debt crisis, the Stability and Growth Pact, the new macroeconomic surveillance framework, the European Stability Mechanism, the Europe 2020 strategy, the banking union a. o. from the view of both the EU and Slovakia.
