Regions have been identified as important players in the knowledge-based economy. Both regional research intensive clusters and science parks have become popular policy instruments across the European Union and their numbers are constantly increasing even in regions that did not traditionally possess a strong R&D base. The study focuses on the position and role research intensive clusters and science parks in the technological and innovative development of region and is supplemented with examples of selected research intensive clusters. The paper follows in theoretical approaches dealing with research and development from macro and regional point of view and policy instruments at the national and regional levels.
