The study deals with the development of the social sphere in Slovakia during quartercentury of the independence of the Slovak Republic and with its comparison with the selected EU countries and first of all with the countries of the Visegrad group. The aim of the analysis is the evaluation of the results that were achieved and that are simultaneously the starting point for the next phase of the development of the social sphere in Slovakia. The study contains eight chapters, from which only one (introductory) devotes itself to internal view on the present development in Slovakia (Bases and context of economic and social developments in Slovakia). The next seven chapters deal with international comparisons of Slovakia with selected EU countries utilizing above all the indicators provided by Eurostat but also by other international institutions that after the analysis can serve as a basis for the changes of particular social policies. In the study is stressed the idea that for the financing and the development of social sphere is responsible primarily each EU member state independently.
