In recent years, the global challenges for sustainable development influenced by megatrends have been represented by demographic change, advances in technology, changes in economic and social dynamics, and trends in environmental degradation. Mitigating the ongoing changes in negative megatrends requires a substantial restructuring of the economy, society and changes in lifestyle of the population. Economic and financial incentives will be needed to create and apply new technologies based on the creation and application of technological, social and innovation in different walks of life. Rapid urbanization, especially in developing countries, calls for major changes in the way urban development is designed and managed and quality strategies to mitigate its negative effects. The working paper aims to outline the issues related to the environmental challenges of cities with an emphasis on technological and social innovations, their economic dimension and positive impact on building a more sustainable city. The study outlines the challenges that cities will face on the road to sustainability. The work is supplemented by an overview of sustainable city from 2018, mediated by the SCI index.
