The study is aimed to assess how the Europe 2020 strategy and meeting its targets is able to promote Slovakia’s economy structural changes necessary for the transition to a higher devel-opment stage. The first part deals with the readiness of Slovakia to achieve the targets of Eu-rope 2020 strategy in comparison with others EU member states on the basis of the Europe 2020 competitiveness index 2014. It is indicated, that Slovakia is significantly lagging behind in particular as regards the preconditions for smart growth, namely in the digital agenda, re-search and innovation and education system. The second part analyses national vs European targets of Europe 2020 strategy. The characteristics of intentions contained in the National reform programme of SR and the Research and innovation strategy for smart specialization of the Slovak republic indicates some contentious issues.
