Data on agricultural output, value added and employment after the year 2000 gives evidence about ongoing production extensification and output contraction. One of the reasons has been the deterioration of terms of trade during the transition period, but the decline has not ceased after the accession to the EU, when the CAP direct support gave the way to the rise of farms´ entrepreneurial income even at low net value added creation. The food processing sector´s output and its market share were also declining. Certain role have played the policy instruments chosen at CAP implementation and the fact, that the transition period failed to establish an efficient vertically integrated food chain. Now, there is a need to implement market organization policies which would promote development of both agriculture and food sectors, which are important for the quality of life in Slovakia.
