In this work we deal with selected problems of SMEs in Slovakia in comparison with selected advanced and Central European economies. We focus on potential development barriers of the business environment in Slovakia. In the first part, we pay special attention on selected aspects of the business environment quality (subjective and objective factors), in the second part we deal with the funding as the key barriers of the development of new businesses. Inno-vative entrepreneurship is considered one of the main factors of development of advanced economies, therefore innovative enterprises in Slovakia are analysed and discussed in the third section.
