The work is aimed at exploring the development context of sovereign funds as entities of growing importance in world financial architecture. The regional characteristics of sovereign fund in terms of the financial assets volume, investment strategies, geopolitical relations of their activities and investment regulatory mechanisms are analyzed. The work also includes a view of the Chinese sovereign funds. The position and functions of sovereign funds in the financial system is discussed, especially in the continued global financial and economic crisis. The views expressed in the work create some scope for the new reasons and options in financial and economic policy in Slovakia. The work contributes to an increasing in awareness of the professional public about the operation of sovereign funds in the world financial architecture.
