Since the second half of the 90’s, the economic development in Slovakia was characterized by the need for very high economic growth rates to achieve some increase of employment. This paper demonstrates that the relation between economic growth and employment in Slovakia differs not only from such relation in the more advanced EU economies, but also from the situation in other Central and Eastern European countries. The economic growth of Slovakia has been driven by those sectors, in which the employment intensity of output growth was very low. The symptoms of such an economic growth are low employment rate, specific em-ployment structure or low share of wages in incomes of the economy.
