This paper focuses on opinions of Slovak and foreign autors on the issue of silver economy. It contains demographic and social dimensions of population ageing, but more emphasis is placed on its economic dimension. In this paper, issue of purchasing power, saving and consumption of seniors is more closely elaborated. At the end, there are presented selected international experiences with the impact of population ageing on agregate demand and on the change of the consumption patterns, mainly from Germany, Great Britain, Belgium and France. In the context of ageing population, new opportunities for innovative companies which can help improving the quality life of elderly come to the forefront, Therefore the ageing population should not be perceived only as a threat, but also as an opportunity, which Slovakia should not squander.
