Research parks are an important part of knowledge-based economy and important source of economic development. Universities and other science organisation are significant source of new knowledge and innovation. Via start-ups and spin-offs, they become a tool for technolo-gy transfer. University research parks are not a new phenomenon. However, compared with traditional ones today's research parks are creating an environment that fosters partnership and collaboration and seek the strategies how to transform innovation into commercial effects. The creation of the university research parks (URPs) and research centres (RCs) in the years 2014 – 2015 has been promoted via Operating Program Research & Development (OP R&D).In this period it was created 13 university research parks and research centres. The aim of the paper is to bring the building of the university research parks and research centres in the Slo-vakia and their focus in the context with defined priorities of Slovak research. The Working Paper is also concerned with sustainability of URPs and RCs and with related risks and threats. The paper provides some results from an empirical survey collected in 2014 related to the topic and a case study of recently created URP.
