In this study, we deal with the relation between economic performance and structure of the economy. We analyze the differences in the economic structure of poor and rich countries and we try to answer the following questions: what can we say about the economic performance based on the information about the structure of an economy, what are the relations between structural changes and changes in the economic performance. In the second part, we analyze the relation between economic performance and export specialization based on income levels. We compare the structure of the Slovak export and its specialization towards the export of products typical for advanced countries with other countries in the world economy. Besides, we identify selected perspective products for export that could lead to higher economic per-formance of the Slovak economy.
