We deal with the analysis of linkages between economic development and diversification (specialization) of exports. The results confirm negative relation between specialization and economic performance for less developed economies and suggest positive relation in later development phases. Besides, we identify a typical export structure for developed countries. We show that developed countries specialize on the production of capital goods while low-income countries specialize on the production and export of basic materials.
