WP 63 Improving the employability of the long-term unemployed in material distress in regions with high long-term unemployment rate

Poverty and unemployment, especially long-term, are some of the worst social events that can occur in a person's life. The long-term unemployment is one of the biggest economic problems of Slovakia. Therefore, the aim of this article is to examine causes of long-term unemployment and possible solutions. The first section presents definition of the terms in legislative. The second section analyzes the current tools used to increase employability of long-term unemployed, also there are presented the results of a survey conducted in regions with high unemployment rate. Longterm unemployed persons perceive external factors as main cause of their unemployment; activation work as main instrument of active labour market policy and among them the most common sources of income are social benefits and legal as well as illegal work. In the last two sections are proposed specific measures and legislative recommendations to improve the employability of the long-term unemployed.
