The process of social transformation, which has seen several significant institutional changes, significantly affected science and research after 1989. By joining the European Union, the Slovak science integrated into the European Research Area with its weaknesses, but also with the chances to overcome the current not very satisfactory situation. Tools and EU programs designed to build by 2020 a smart, sustainable and inclusive European economy transforms barriers and incentives into motivation of science and research agents leading to improvement and change towards a knowledge economy. For this challenge subscribes the SR with its science policy and ambition to create conditions for the development of science and research, taking into account the specifics of domestic development.
