Present paper analyzes main forms and tools of Government policy to attract and maintain the foreign direct investment (FDI); characterizes effectiveness of these measures and potential risks. Special attention is devoted to strengths and weaknesses of Slovakia as a location for foreign direct investment and some recommendations for policy in this area are outlined. As the key factor to support FDI and investment in general, the development of a favourable business environment and measures to improve the national innovation system are pointed out. Current global financial crisis and its impact on real economy create new problems in the analyzed area. It is important for the Government policy to combine the rational response to crisis phenomena with long-term strategy orientation to improve the competitiveness of the national economy.
